The current City Council has accomplished in the past four years.
Infrastructure
• Issued bonds for road paving and sidewalks at seven schools.
• Three critical bridge projects starting in April
• Partnered with Missouri Dept. of Transportation (Mo DOT) to address 24 Highway stormwater, sidewalks, street crossings, and paving
• Invested in storm water infrastructure to reduce flooding in high-risk areas
• Expanded Independence Power and Light (IPL) electrical generation capacity
• Constructed three replacement fire stations and replaced two fire trucks
• Addressed outdated manual utility meters - electric and water meters
Neighborhoods
• Two million pounds of roadside trash picked up in three years
• Twenty members of the trash pick-up team who were homeless are now housed
• Funded Habitat for Humanity to do home repairs for seniors and disabled to stay in their homes
• Increased funding for demolition of dangerous buildings
• Enhanced rental inspections to protect new renters
• Completed a parks master plan to guide the next 10 years
Economic Development
• Negotiated three-year extension for Mavericks lease at Independence Events Center
• Formed a private public partnership to rehab HUB shopping center at 23rd
• Approved 1,200 new housing units
• Approved Wally’s travel center to address blight at key intersection
• Attracted world class investment with Nebius data center
Operations
• Hired a new city manager
• Consolidated 11 city departments into a single modern building
• Updated portions of the City Charter for the first time in 40 years
Finance
• Clean audits every year
• Established a savings plan for a replacement Municipal Services depot
• Reduced existing city debt by more than $60 million
• Fully funded the city rainy-day reserve fund.
• Financed body cameras for all patrol officers through marijuana sales tax
• Maintained a healthy bond rating
